Places to Visit

The Royal Forest of Dean is unique in the way that its villages are scattered equally across the district. It is a land of rolling hills, market gardens and beautiful forest scenery. It is a haven for those of you wanting to experience the peace and tranquility of village life in the Forest. It is a special area rich in history and tradition with many of the remnants of the industrial past remaining.

For many of the locals, past traditions are still in place and the daily hustle and bustle of modern day life is a world away. The delightful forest cottages are very common, and many still stand as they did in the mining era, now carefully tended by their owners. The quaint Forest roads take you along breathtakingly beautiful countryside, through a land of rolling hills, market gardens and spectacular forest, and each and every village within the trail has something individual to offer..

A leaflet of the "Village Trail", including a map of the area is available from the Tourist Information Centres.

To follow the Village Trail around our web pages, start by selecting the Village Trail logo below, and then follow it from each village to the next.  There are 17 villages to visit on the trail.
