Places to Visit in the Forest of Dean
It took a bunch of far sighted steam railway enthusiasts to release the potential of a derelict and abandoned colliery site at Norchard in the Forest of Dean. Now 26 years after those first hesitant steps, Dean Forest Railway's Steam Centre has become a mecca to enthusiasts from all over the country. The Norchard to Lydney line is part of the only remaining part that has survived from the labyrinth of industrial tram roads that once transported the goods from the industries of the forest. Regular service of trains operate from Norchard to St. Mary's Halt (for parks and lake) and Lydney Junction (for Network Services). At Norchard, visitors can see a large collection of coaches and wagons, a re-constructed small station with locomotives 'in steam' and train trips. Accredited railway museum, large souvenir shop.

Lydney Park Gardens
Without doubt the best time to visit the gardens is during April and early May when the rhododendrons and azalias are in bloom, and the maples are in new leaf. The vision is breathtakingly beautiful. The main display is in a sheltered wooded valley with excellent landscaping, pools and dream-like pathways.
Rhododendrons and azalias are available for purchase at very reasonable prices!
Teas are available in the house on open days, and there is ample space for picnics in the Deer Park.
Lydney Park Gardens is situated on the A48 Gloucester-Chepstow road between
Lydney and Aylburton.
(20 miles from Gloucester, 8 miles from Chepstow, 12 miles from the Severn Bridge)
The gardens, Roman Camp and Roman Museum are open on certain open days between April and June. Dates and times of opening vary each year, and can be found by enquiry to the Estate Office, tel. 01594-842844.
