Whitecliff Furnace

[ Buildings at Risk ]

Scheduled Ancient Monument

Risk Category 3A

Conservation Area? No

Dating from 1799-1810, this furnace was built for experimental use of coke as a fuel. There is substantial fabric above, and probably below ground level. It is located just off an unclassified, narrow road but there is sufficient land for access and parking.

Considerable grant aid was awarded this structure in the early 1980s in order that essential repairs could be carried out. English Heritage have agreed to grant aid the final phase of essential repairs and in order to bring the site into some form of use, Dean Heritage Museum are currently preparing a bid for Local Heritage Initiative funding to create a museum and interpretation centre, which would incorporate the nearby Furnace Cottage.
