The Wild Forest

17th July to 31st October 1999

An exploration of plant and animal life in the Forest of Dean. Find out what makes this area unique and decide whether the 'beast of Dean' really exists. The exhibition includes activities and 'hands-on' displays.


Autumn Apple Day

Sunday 24th October

The Heritage centre kicks off the Forest Food Festival with a celebration of apples, which have been grown in this area for hundreds of years for food, for cider making and which were even eated by the celebrated Gloucester Old Spot Pigs. This event includes traditional food and drink as well as apple-bobbing.


Children's Half-term Activities

Tuesday 26th October and Thursday 28th October

Workshops for 8 to 12 year olds
10 am to 12 noon

Tuesday 26th October - Prehistoric Life
An Autumn woodland walk with activities explores the origins of human life in the Forest and looks at wildlife found in the autumn, followed by a prehistoric session including a stone age spinning activity.

Thursday 28th October - Hallowe'en
Celebrate autumn in the Forest with seasonal activities, which include mask-making using natural materials and making pumpkin lanterns.

Booking is essential for these activities.
Workshops cost an extra £1.50 per person


Woodland Weekend

Saturday 30th to Sunday 31st October

Discover the 'wonders of woodland' and experience autumn at the Dean Heritage Centre. Activities for children include making pumpkin lanterns, apple-bobbing and mask making. The event will include modern forestry displays and traditional woodland crafts.


Forest Future

6th November 1999 to 26th March 2000

An exhibition by local schools explores children's hopes and expectations and looks at the future of the Forest of Dean


Christmas Activities

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December

Traditional Christmas workshops will include making Christmas cards, decorations and gifts. Visit the Forester's cottage for festive cheer and guess the weight of the Christmas cake.
