Traders in Coleford in 1830

Just as in today's Yellow Pages, there was a Trades Directory for various places in the 1800's. The one for 1830 includes a list of traders and other prominent people in Coleford. (Pigot's Directory). The introduction includes a little information of Coleford at that time:

Coleford is a chapelry in the parish of Newland and the Hundred of St Briavel, lying 20 miles from Gloucester. The Grammar School there was founded in 1632 by Edward Bell. In the returns for 1821 Coleford is shown as having 1,801 inhabitants.

As with all directories, the information in this one is already a little out of date, as by this time Coleford was a parish in its own right, and had it's new church in the town centre which replaced the original chapel. The sketch (shown right) dated 1797 shows the original chapel in the Market Place, together with the old Market Hall which has steps up the outside leading to the rooms above.

The people listed in the directory obviously include some from the surrounding area rather than just in the town itself. Those listed without a "trade", e.g. as "Mrs", "Mr", "Esq", etc. are important people in the community. Note that David Mushet is included amongst these.

Obviously at this time, Coleford was a thriving community with lots of tradespeople, and no less than 10 inns and public houses.
