Local Energy Use
-
Energy demand in the District is estimated at 2214 GWh
per year
-
Around a third of energy is used in transport, a third
in our homes and approximately a third in businesses:
-
Nearly all energy used in the District comes from fossil
fuels and nuclear power. The District is almost entirely dependent on external
energy supplies.
-
Total energy use in the District releases around 770,000
tonnes of carbon dioxide (the most important greenhouse gas)per year. This
amount is equal to about seven times the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed
each year by all the trees in the Forest of Dean.

Efficiency
-
Housing is a key area for energy efficiency in the District.
It accounts for around a third of current energy use and a large amount of
new housing is expected in the next decade.
-
The District Council has a Home Energy Strategy for improving
energy efficiency, to comply with the Home Energy Conservation Act. The aim
of this is to improve energy efficiency by 30%

Business Energy
Efficiency
-
Energy use in local businesses is dominated by a few large
companies with very high energy demand. Generally these companies already
have an interest in energy efficiency.
-
There are a large amount of small businesses in the Forest
of Dean, where uptake of energy efficiency has generally been low.
-
Low cost measures can often reduce the energy demand of
businesses by 10-30%
