Minsterworth

Minsterworth is a village on the banks of the River Severn, and situated on the A48 Gloucester to Chepstow road. In addition to the nucleus of the village, based around the parish church, there are small separate clusters of houses in the parish. The village was once an important place for salmon fishing in the River Severn, and a carving in the church shows three salmon in a net. Nowadays the elver fishermen gather here to net the tiny eels which have made their way in their millions from the Sargasso Sea to the River Severn. Driving past the village on the main A48 road, you are sure to notice the ancient building which is now the Village Hall.

Churches

Minsterworth's beautiful church is set right on the banks of the River Severn. Its churchyard boasts three great old yew trees. In the church is a 15th century font, where a brass once showed the height of the flood waters from the river. There is a Jacobean pulpit. Half of a precious 14th century cope remains, having been once sent to the Royal School of Needlework at South Kensington for restoration and repair.
