Home Walks Captain Angus Buchanan VC

Angus Buchanan was the son of a Coleford Doctor.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross during the 1914-18 war, when with great heroism, he rescued two wounded soldiers in the heat of battle. During the war he was wounded three times, and lost the use of his sight.

At the end of the war, Captian Angus Buchanan VC returned to Coleford, and then attended Oxford University where he studied law, and then came home to Coleford to practice as a solicitor.

The last time the bell was rung in the clock tower in the Market Place was in honour of this valiant soldier.

Funds were raised in Coleford to provide some form of permanent recognition to his bravery, and when asked what form he would like this to take, he said "Somewhere for the young children to play". As a result the Angus Buchanan Recreation Field was purchased, and iron gates were specially made, which incorporate the Victoria Cross.

Captain Angus Buchanan VC lived the remainder of his life in Coleford, and died here. He was buried in Coleford Cemetery, next to the Recreation Field.
